The invention provides a polymerization inhibitor which is easy of handling and little toxic and has high polymerization-inhibiting effect on aromatic vinyl compounds, and a method for inhibiting the polymerization of aromatic vinyl compounds. The invention relates to a polymerization inhibitor for aromatic vinyl compounds which comprises a specific quinonemethide compound and a specific organic sulfonic acid; and a method for inhibiting the polymerization of aromatic vinyl compounds by adding simultaneously a specific quinonemethide compound, a specific organic sulfonic acid, and, if necessary, a specific N-oxyl compound in the production, purification, or storage step of the vinyl compounds.
