PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication method usable in an EPON structure by causing an OLT to implement functions of a RADIUS server to authenticate ONUs and realizing a simplified MD-5 algorithm adapted to use between the OLT and the RADIUS server. SOLUTION: The authentication method in an Ethernet (R) passive optical network is characterized in comprising: a first step of causing an OLT to receive, from an ONU, a packet informing of the start of an authentication process, and, responsive to that receipt, controlling the OLT to transmit, to the ONU, a packet for requesting an identifier of the ONU; a second step of causing the OLT to receive from the ONU the identifier and to compare the identifier to a previously stored value to determine whether the identifier corresponds to the previously stored value; a third step of transmitting an authentication success packet to the ONU when it is determined at the second step that the correspondence exists; a fourth step of transmitting an authentication failure packet to the ONU when it is determined at the second step that the correspondence does not exist; and a fifth step of after completion of the third or fourth step, controlling the OLT to inform the ONU that an authentication process has ended.
