PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus for carrying out automatic focusing such as a digital camera and preventing an initializing time from shortening when setting a photographing mode. SOLUTION: A flowchart for explaining releasing operations from a photographing mode includes: a step S22 of turning off an image display of an LCD when first a release signal for releasing the photographing mode is detected (S21); a step S23 of setting a shutter to a fully opening position; a step S24 of whether or not a focus position detection signal is at a high level is then checked; a step S31 of moving a focus optical system in a focus near direction when the focus position detection signal is not at a high level, while the steps S24, S31 are repeated; a step S25 of moving the focus optical system in a focus inf direction when the focus position detection signal is at a high level; a step S26 of whether or not the focus position detection signal is at a low level is checked; a step S32 of moving the focus optical system in the focus inf direction when the focus position detection signal is not at a low level, while the steps S26 and S32 are repeated; a step S34 (this flow differs from that shown in Fig.5(not shown)) of setting a focus contained position to a photographing mode set position when the focus position detection signal is at a low level; a step S28 of checking whether or not a zoom position detection signal is at a low level; a step S33 of moving a zoom means in the zoom containing direction when the zoom position detection signal is not at a low level, while the steps S28, S33 are repeated; a step S29 of setting the zoom means to the zoom contained position when at a low level; and a step S30 of completing the photographing mode release operations.
