PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct-current electromagnetic brake which can save electric power. SOLUTION: The direct-current electromagnetic brake includes a fixed iron core 5 of magnetic substance, a movable iron core 4 opposed to the fixed iron core 5 with a certain interval interposed therebetween, coils 1 and a return spring 3. The direct-current electromagnetic brake is operated by making the fixed iron core 5 attract the movable iron core 4 against the force of the return spring 3 by the magnetic action of current flowing through the coils 1. The direct-current electromagnetic brake has the two coils 1, 2 which are connected to each other in parallel. At the time of start, both of the coils, 1, 2 are energized so as to generate large attraction force, and after the attraction, energization of one coil 2 is stopped so as to decrease exciting current.
