PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphor for use in a fluorescent lamp, comprising a red emitting phosphor and having a high color rendering index. SOLUTION: A fluorescent lamp (10) includes a phosphor layer (16) comprising Sr<SB>4</SB>Al<SB>14</SB>O<SB>25</SB>:Eu<SP>2+</SP>(SAE) and at least one of each of a red, green and blue emitting phosphor. The phosphor layer can optionally include an additional deep red phosphor and a yellow emitting phosphor. The resulting lamp (10) exhibits a white light having a color rendering index of 90 or higher with a correlated color temperature of 2,500-10,000 Kelvin. The use of SAE in phosphor blends for lamps results in high CRI light sources with increased stability and acceptable lumen maintenance over the course of the lamp life. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
