<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a humectant for the skin having excellent durability of moisture retaining effect and sense of use and is highly safe. <P>SOLUTION: The active ingredients of the humectant for the skin comprises a β-glucan-containing material and a thermally treated cell body of lactic acid bacterium. The β-glucan is preferably β-1,3-1,6-glucan. The humectant for the skin comprises 1-40 mass% calculated as β-glucan of theβ-glucan-containing material and 4-95 mass% of the thermally treated cell body of lactic acid bacterium in the solid content. The β-glucan-containing material is preferably prepared from at least one kind selected from a bacterium belonging to the genus Aureobasidium, a fruit body of a basidiomycete and a mycelium of a basidiomycete. The β-glucan-containing material is preferably a culture obtained by culturing Aureobasidium pullulans M-1(FERM P-19213).
