An estimation unit (20) estimates the internal temperature of exhaust tube based on regular catalyst temperature detected under steady operation of engine. Another estimation unit (30) estimates the temperature of exhaust gas flowing through the catalyst in accordance with estimated tube/regular catalyst temperature, based on which actual temperature of catalyst is determined. An independent claim is also included for catalyst temperature estimation method.
