PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus having the advantage of enhancing the operability of photographing for both right-handed users and left-handed users while suppressing cost increase. SOLUTION: A photographing optical system 14 is placed to a front face of a case 12 of the imaging apparatus 10 and a photographing switch 20 is provided to an upper face of the case 12. The photographing switch 20 is placed at a position operable by a finger of the right hand of the user in an erected state of the case wherein the upper face of the case 12 faces upward and the front face of the case 12 faces in front, and placed at a position operable by a finger of the left hand of the user in an inverted state of the case wherein the upper face of the case 12 faces downward and the front face of the case 12 faces in front. When the imaging apparatus 10 is set to a left-handed photographing mode and the imaging apparatus 10 is brought into the inverted state of the case and the user operates the photographing switch 20 by a finger of the left hand, the top-bottom direction of image information is converted into a direction turned by 180 degrees and the resulting information is recorded on a recording medium.
