PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high-speed and stable image formation by enabling scanning at a plurality of scanning lines by a single laser light. SOLUTION: A micro-mirror array 303 is constituted by spreading many micro-mirrors both longitudinally and laterally in a plane. An inclination of each micro-mirror is independently controlled according to an image signal. When a density value of the image signal is "1" or "0", the micro-mirror is controlled to ON or OFF, respectively, and a reflecting light proceeds to a direction (first direction) of a polygon mirror 304 and to a second direction. By making a scanning period in a main scanning direction of the polygon mirror 304 agree with a time for a photosensitive drum 211 to rotate by a vertical scanning direction length of the micro-mirror array 303, scanning lines of the number of the micro-mirrors arranged in the vertical scanning direction are obtained in one scanning. Moreover, a resolution in the vertical scanning direction is changed by changing the number of the micro-mirrors to be controlled to the same angle at the same time. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
