A power supply (11,12) provides an operating voltage via an external power supply and/or an internal battery (11). A control/evaluation circuitry (13) controls an indicator (17A-C) which shows the state of wear of the brake lining, and evaluates signals from a number of wear sensors (15A-F). A connecting device (14A-F) couples the wear sensors to the evaluation device. A memory (16) stores actual wear states and previously detected wear states.
