A composite element for bonding and/or fixing an electrode (10) with an electrode arm (15) of a welding unit, preferably a resistance welding unit, where the element includes a base body and a sensor (41) for introduction of ultrasonic waves into the electrode and/or for reception of such waves, preferably transverse ultrasonic waves or ultrasonic waves with a predominant transverse component, especially of strong waves and/or torsional waves. An independent claim is included for a holding device for holding the electrode, as above.
