In-situ decontamination of polluted water is effected by construction of a permeable barrier of colloidal activated carbon in a polluted aquifer, the colloidal activated carbon of defined particle size being introduced as an aqueous suspension of low ionic strength and then being controllably immobilized in a desired region.
