A parking aid system on a first vehicle comprises bumper 13 mounted distance measuring sensors 12 (eg acoustic, ultrasonic, electromagnetic) and an alert means (eg audible, visible, lights, horn, hazard lamps) which warns the driver of a second vehicle when the second vehicle approaches the first vehicle too closely. The alert signal may change in dependence on the determined distance. The driver of the second vehicle, which may not be equipped with a parking aid system, can then take action to avoid a collision. The system operates when the first vehicle is parked with the ignition switched off, or when the first vehicle is moving in slow, closely spaced traffic. The system is only activated when a microwave proximity sensor detects the presence of a second vehicle within a predetermined threshold, thus reducing current drain on the battery. |
