A hand-held dish washing spray has a handle (10) around an inner passage (40) with a cylindrical insert (42) and a free-moving sliding piston (52). The cylinder is open at one end to a shut-off valve (64). Together, the cylinder (42) and piston (52) limit the volume of an air-filled void (56). If the valve is closed suddenly, the recoil is dampened by movement of the piston towards the cylinder base (44), compressing the air (56).
