[Class 120 (i)] In a machine for opening, cleaning and forming laps of kapok and like fibres of the kind wherein the fibres are opened and then conveyed on a current of air to a continuously moving pervious surface which permits escape of the air and on which the lap is formed, the material is introduced into the machine by an endless feed belt g furnished with supple, resilient tongues, teeth, prongs or other projections h of a material such as rubber. Bales of material j are supported on automatically rising platforms i and layers of fibre are detached therefrom by the toothed belt or apron g, the fibres being projected into an air trunk a by rotary strippers l. The fibres may be first loosened by rakes m. The fibres are conducted through the trunk a to a chamber c by an air current created by a fan b and are deposited on foraminous belts d, e, the laps so formed being united and fed from the chamber c on a conveyer f. Projections n may be provided in the air trunk to assist in opening and cleaning the fibre, the detached waste matter being collected in traps o. An auxiliary fan p is arranged to come automatically into operation when the main power units are inoperative so as to maintain the air pressure in the chamber c and to retain the partly formed laps on the belts d, e a flap valve q swinging downwardly to close the trunk a when the fan p is started. Specification 462,962, [Group VII], is referred to. |
