The switch (32) comprises an input wire and an output wire, the input wire being dimensionally stable and resiliently flexible. The input wire is in contact with a non-electrically conductive region of the staple cartridge when the latter is secured to the stapler head, so that the wire overcomes its spring tension and the switch moves from a first position to a second position. The spring tension returns the switch to its first position when the cartridge is removed from the stapler head.
