PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device in which an elastic layer is prevented from beinng permanentally deformed by a pressure force in the case that a fixing roller and a pressure roller have the elastic layer. SOLUTION: The fixing device 1, by which a toner image is fixed on recording paper 7 between the fixing nip 6 of a pair of rotatable rotary bodies 2 and 3, is provided with: a pressure means 5 to bring at least one rotary body 2 out of the rotary bodies 2 and 3 into press-contact with the other rotary body 3, a driving source to rotate and drive the rotary body; and a wedge-shaped pressure release member 12 provided on the downstream side of the fixing nip 6. In the fixing device 1, the driving source rotates in a direction reverse to a rotating direction at the time of feeding transfer paper, and the pressure release member 12 is inserted between the fixing nip 6 so as to make both rotary bodies 2 and 3 away from each other.
