PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of an internal combustion engine, which realizes improvement of a combustion condition and reduction of fuel consumption. SOLUTION: In the engine 10, an ignition plug 27 is applied with high voltage from an ignitor 28, and a discharge spark is generated between opposing electrodes of the plug. This causes fuel introduced in a cylinder to be provided for combustion. An ECU 40 comprises a means for adjustably setting, after starting of discharge at ignition timing, time duration of the discharge. The ECU 40 detects a combustion condition of the engine 10 and extends the discharge time duration by the ignition plug 27 when combustion deterioration is detected. This facilitates temperature rise near the opposing electrodes of the plug 27, and ignitability is improved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
