PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a film transport mechanism in an image reader for reliably and easily reading images or the like recorded on a film even when it is a short film cut for one frame. SOLUTION: At least the upstream side of a scan gate in the transport path of the film transport mechanism is constituted in a tunnel shape, a film insertion port is provided on the upstream side of the transport path in the tunnel shape and the distance from the film insertion port to the scan gate is constituted to be the length of one frame of the film to be processed or longer. The transport path in the tunnel shape is provided with a transport roller pair for sending the film to an upstream side transport roller pair and the nip pressure of the transport roller pair is set at a level higher than the nip pressure of the upstream side transport roller pair.
