摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smoothly switch an operation mode in an engine having a plurality of operation modes. SOLUTION: In the engine, the plurality of the operation modes are carried out in accordance with combinations of one of four-cycle operation and two-cycle operation, and one of combustion ignition control with ignition and self-ignition preferential ignition control involving a case of performing no ignition as well as the case of performing ignition. When switching the operation mode, the operation of the same cycle type as that of a second operation mode is performed and a transition cycle performing the combustion ignition control is once implemented between a first operation mode before switching and the second operation mode after switching. The opening/closing timing of exhaust and intake valves in the transition cycle is different from that of the second operation mode. The combustion ignition control is performed in a combustion chamber where the transition cycle is once completed until the transition cycle is once completed in every combustion chamber.
