PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which enables accurate detection by preventing a document size from being misdetected owing to effect of disturbing light and can shorten a detection time by making the detection of the document size efficient. SOLUTION: The image reader detects whether a document size in a vertical scanning direction being less than a given size by a document size detecting sensor 150 and detects a document size in a horizontal scanning direction by a CCD 140, and a scanner controller 300 controls the document size detecting sensor and CCD to perform first document size decision processing when an output of detection result of the CCD when a lamp 111 is turned off includes a part whose value is smaller than the given output value and second document size decision processing when the output of the detection result of the CCD is larger than the given output value, thereby deciding the document size from detection results of the document size detecting sensor and CCD.
