PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct a range finding error caused by fluctuation of an optical amount incident on a light receiving element all ways, surely, and regardless of a machine, as for an optical wave range finder of a phase difference system. SOLUTION: The optical wave range finder comprises: a reference signal generator (26) for generation of a reference signal; a light source (20) for projecting a range finding light (L) modulated with the reference signal; a light receiving element (28) for converting a range finding light reflected by a target (22) into a range finding signal (M); a frequency converter (37) for converting the range finding signal into a frequency reduced intermediate frequency signal (N); a A/D converter (42) for sampling the intermediate frequency signal; a CPU (44) for measuring the distance from an initial phase of the intermediate frequency signal sampled by the A/D converter; and a memory (46) for previously memorizing a compensation table indicating the compensation amount of the initial phase corresponding to the light amount over the all levels of incident range finding light amount on the light receiving element.
