PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymeric composition suitable for producing hard or soft micro-capsules in a state free from microorganisms which induce diseases. SOLUTION: The polymeric composition based on PVA composed of (a) 50-99.9 wt.% of polyvinyl alcohol with an average molecular weight of 5,000-25,000 and with a degree of hydrolysis of 79-99.9 mol %, (the polyvinyl alcohol may contain carboxy groups or polyglycol units in the molecule), and (b) 0.1-5. wt.% of one or more polysaccharides of the formula where R<SB>1</SB>-R<SB>3</SB>are each H, CH<SB>2</SB>OH, COOMe, COOMe, COOR<SB>4</SB>, CONHR<SB>6</SB>, or CH<SB>2</SB>OSO<SB>3</SB>Me, and Me is Na, K, NH<SB>4</SB>, Mg, or Ca, n is a number from 20-20,000, R<SB>4</SB>is 1-4C alkyl, R<SB>5</SB>is OH, NHCOCH<SB>3</SB>, H or OCOCH<SB>3</SB>and R<SB>6</SB>is H, COCH<SB>3</SB>, or 1-4C alkyl.
