PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-carbon steel wire with high strength and high toughness, useful as a piano wire, an oil tempered steel wire, a PC (prestressed concrete) wire, a PC stranded wire and a wire rope PC. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the piano wire rod or the hard steel wire rod comprises hot-rolling the hard steel wire rod which has the chemical composition of the steel material, and the chemical composition, the size and the number density of the contained inclusions specified; and directly patenting it, or re-austenitizing and then patenting it. Then, the wire rod has a structure mainly consisting of pearlite and containing micro-martensite grains with the size (the maximum length) of 100μm or smaller in a C cross section.
