PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply producing a 5-bromobenzoxazole compound useful as a photographic sensitizing dye, an additive, a medicine, an agrochemical, a dye or an electronic material or as their intermediate at a low cost in a high yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing the compound represented by general formula (I) (R is an alkyl or an aryl) is characterized by brominating a compound represented by general formula (II) with bromine and a compound represented by general formula (III) (R<SB>1</SB>to R<SB>4</SB>are each independently an alkyl, an aralkyl or an aryl) and then subjecting the obtained compound represented by general formula (IV) to a cyclization reaction without isolating the compound represented by general formula (IV).
