<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clean an image reading position with air so as not to cause an image reading failure. <P>SOLUTION: A duct 41 with a U-shaped cross section is provided at an upper part of an image reading glass 12 to form an air duct. A fan 60 is driven to form air flow in the duct 41 to blow away paper powder and dust on the image reading glass 12, cleaning an image reading position R. The fan 60 is not made to operated while an image of an original D is read, but made to operate before feeding the original D. An image reading failure resulting from the flutter of the original caused by operating the fan during original reading is prevented.
