PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lower the discharge amount of unburnt fuel by reducing fuel atomization interfering with intake valves 5A, 5B at the time of intake stroke injection when the fuel is injected from a fuel injection valve 7 arranged in a side part of a combustion chamber 1 to a central part side of the combustion chamber 1 through the two intake valves 5A, 5B. SOLUTION: A lift amount of the intake valves 5A, 5B is reduced when the operation is performed in a homogeneous operation mode for performing fuel injection in an intake stroke and in a prescribed low rotation/low load range.
