PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus wherein the utilizing efficiency of the imaging face of an imaging element is enhanced. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus is provided with: an imaging element 102 for applying photoelectric conversion to a subject optical image and outputting an image signal; an image forming optical system 101 that forms the subject optical image on the imaging face of the imaging element 102 at a longitudinal and lateral magnification ratio nearly equal to the aspect ratio of the imaging element, being the ratio of the length in the horizontal direction to the length in the vertical direction in the imaging element 102; and a position conversion information storage section 12 and a position conversion section 13 that use the longitudinal and lateral magnification ratio of the image forming optical system 101 to convert the image signal into image data wherein the vertical magnification and the horizontal magnification are nearly the same on the basis of the image signal outputted from the imaging element 102.
