PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method for an automatic transmission capable of quickly determining if change of gears is permissible or not. SOLUTION: An input command value for an engagement side solenoid valve to regulate applied hydraulic pressure to a friction element to be engaged for a target gear is changed in a period t1-t7. A time change ratio in a period t2-t3for applied fluid pressure detected by a detection means as applied fluid pressure to the friction element pressure-regulated by the engagement side solenoid valve based on the input command value is determined.
