PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new liquid crystal material and a liquid crystal composition containing the same as a key component with a wide temperature range of operation and a negative dielectric constant anisotropy with a large absolute value, and to provide a liquid crystal display element of a vertical orientation type or the like with high reliability using the liquid crystal composition. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains a compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein Radenotes a 2-7C straight chain alkyl group, and Rbdenotes a 1-5C straight chain alkyl group).
