PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-molecular weight polyarylene ethynylene vinylene with high cis- or trans-structure content in the microstructure, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polyarylene ethynylene vinylene having recurring unit of the general formula(III) comprises reacting a diyne compound of the general formula(II) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a complex of the general formula(I). In the general formula(I), R<SP>1</SP>is H or an alkyl; R<SP>2</SP>is a trialkylsilyl group; (a) is 1 or 2; THF is a tetrahydrofuran ligand; b is an integer of 0-2; M<SP>1</SP>is a rare earth metal atom; X is N or P; R<SP>3</SP>is a (substituted) aryl or (substituted) alkyl; and Z is a dialkylsilylene group. In the general formula(II), R<SP>4</SP>is H, an alkyl, alkoxy or (substituted) aryl; and Ar is an aryl or heteroaryl group.
