PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing the pollution by algae of water in a water area flowing into a water intake passage, and a water stream cutoff fence used for the pollution prevention. SOLUTION: According to the method for preventing the pollution of the water, a water area partition fence 5 for suppressing the move of algae is arranged to partition a water pollution preventive water area A, which has at least one inflow passage and one water intake passage, from other water area in a lake and/or marsh 1 having at least one inflow passage 2 and one water intake passage 4. At least part of the water surface of the water pollution preventive water area is shaded by anchoring or floating a shading materials 6 on the water surface. Since the inflow of the algae is suppressed by the water area partition fence in the water pollution preventive water area, the shading materials suppress the growth/proliferation of algae efficiently, so that the water with suppressed growth/proliferation of the algae in the above water area can be taken out via the water intake passage. Besides, the growth/proliferation of the algae can be suppressed efficiently even by the use of less shading materials than usual case since the water pollution preventive water area is a part of the lake and/or marsh.
