METHOD AND DEVICE FOR ENCODING OR DECODING AUDIO SIGNAL OR BIT STREAM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient encoding method for an audio signal by error-permitted Huffman coding.

SOLUTION: A discrete time type sample of an audio signal is converted into a frequency range to obtain a spectrum value. The spectrum value is encoded by using a code table having a limited number of ciphers mutually differing in length. A cipher given to the spectrum value is shorter and shorter according as the possibility of generation of the spectrum value is higher and higher. A raster is prescribed for an encoded bit stream, and this raster includes raster points which are arranged at equal distances, which are decided based upon the code table in use. For error-permitted Huffman coding, preferential ciphers representing spectrum values which are more psycho-acoustically important and special than other spectrum values are arrayed so that beginnings of the respective preferential ciphers match the raster points.
