PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape having satisfactory image quality, satisfactory running durability without wear properties and no increase of dropout even when the lead time from manufacture of a polyester film to manufacture of the magnetic tape is long, and to provide the polyester film for a recording medium effective for the the magnetic tape. SOLUTION: In the polyester film for the recording medium, a coating film containing fine particles and an organic compound is formed on one surface of the polyester film. The surface A on the coating film side is the surface on which a data recording material thin film is to be formed and fine surface protrusions on the surface A of the coating film has 5 to 60 nm diameters. The surface A has 3 to 1,200 million pieces/mm<SP>2</SP>fine surface protrusions, 0.5 to 2.0 nm surface roughness Ra value and≤10,000 pieces/mm<SP>2</SP>polyester oligomer matters deposited on the surface A of the coating film by leaving the coating film for 30 days at 30°C and having≥17 nm height.
