PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water soluble lubricant for metal working which is suitably used in aluminum press working and excels in both workability and degreasing properties. SOLUTION: This water soluble lubricant for metal working comprises (A)≤85 mass% water, (B) 5-75 mass% metal salt of an organic carboxylic acid having a carboxylic acid residue having≥8 carbons in total and an acid to alkali ratio of 1:0.5-1.1, (C) 1-50 mass% at least one metal salt selected from a metal salt of an organic phosphoric ester, a metal salt of an organic phosphorous ester, a metal salt of an organic phosphonic acid, and a metal salt of an organic boric ester, each containing an alkyl group having≥8 carbons in total, and (D) 10-80 mass% nonionic surface active agent.
