PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handy scanner device in which a memory can be effectively used and thereby the device can be reduced in size and cost. SOLUTION: After registering the leading end of the handy scanner device with a manuscript, the device starts reading with a read station. After having passed through a distance corresponding to that from the leading end to the read station, the device starts writing in the memory. After mating a posterior end of a main body of the device with desired position of the manuscript to terminate the read with regard to data written in the memory, the data corresponding to the distance from the posterior end of the read station to the posterior end thereof are made ineffective.
