PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rolling roll superior in spalling resistance for a galvanized steel sheet, which prevents damage formation on a roll surface without increasing the unit consumption of a roll material, and to provide a steel material suitable for manufacturing the rolling roll. SOLUTION: The steel material for a rolling roll superior in spalling resistance for rolling a galvanized steel sheet comprises, by mass%, 0.6-1.2% C, 0.3-1.5% Si, 1% or less (excluding 0%) Mn, 1% or less ( including 0%) Ni, 2-6% Cr, and 1% or less (excluding 0%) Mo, 0.01-0.30% in total of one or more selected from the group consisting of of Ti, Zr, Hf and Nb, and N limited to 0.02% or less (including 0%), and the balance Fe with unavoidable impurities.
