PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric encoder which copes with a main scale of a different pitch, using one kind of a light-receiving part. SOLUTION: In the photoelectric encoder, an interference pattern, generated by the grids (21, 42) at least on the main scales (20, 40), is detected by light-receiving parts (30, 33) which are combined an index grid 31 with a light-receiving element 32; with the light-receiving parts move relatively with the main scale, between the main scale and light-receiving part, a lens 60 and/or an aperture 62 are/is inserted; and magnification is set, by adjusting distances among the lens or the aperture and the main scale and the light-receiving part, (a, b) or (m, l).
