PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber to be mounted on a vehicle for automatically controlling damping force in response to the vibration of a unsprung mass while preventing excessively frequent change-over of the damping force. SOLUTION: A piston 5 to which a piston rod 6 is connected is fitted into a cylinder 2 filled with oil liquid in a manually operable manner and a damping force generating mechanism is mounted thereon. The vibration of the unsprung mass to which the cylinder 2 is connected moves a dead weight 55 and a spool 51 to adjust pressure in back pressure chambers 39, 46 which controls the valve opening pressure of disc valves 38, 45 to control damping force. When, the amplitude of the unsprung mass is greater on an elongation side or on a contraction side, the damping force is reduced to minimize the input to a sprung mass (a vehicle body) and increase damping force on the opposite side to effectively damping the vibration of the sprung mass, thereby stabilizing the vehicle body in flat attitude. The pressure in the back pressure chambers 39, 46 is controlled by the dead weight 55 to control the damping force, preventing the excessive frequent change-over of the damping force.
