PURPOSE: Provided is a high specific surface area carbon material which is able to be effectively used as a gaseous or a liquid space adsorbent and electrode materials of electrodeionization. CONSTITUTION: In the high specific surface area carbon material, a superfine fibrous nano-carbon, which has the carbon element at least 95 wt.%, a fiber diameter of 0.6-500 nm and an aspect ratio of the fiber of at least 5, is grown in a medium having a specific surface area measured by N2 BET method of fine holes or the surface such as a fibrous carbon containing at least 85 wt.% of carbon and having a fiber diameter of 1,000-50,000 nm and granular carbon having a particle diameter of 500-50,000 nm consisting of a carbon hexagonal plane and a laminated structure thereof.
