PURPOSE: A device for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a method therefor are provided to prevent unnecessary power consumption by detecting whether a currently displayed image is a moving picture or a still picture and blocking that power is supplied to devices which are not actually operated when the currently displayed image is the still picture. CONSTITUTION: A tone voltage generating unit(800) generates a plurality of tone voltages. A data driving unit(500) selects a tone voltage corresponding to image data among a plurality of the tone voltages, and provides the selected tone voltage as a data voltage to pixels. A signal control unit(600) provides the image data to the data driving unit, judges whether an image of a current frame is a moving picture or a still picture on the basis of difference between current image data and previous image data, and stops a certain control operation when the image of the current frame is the still image.
