The backrest has a detecting system linked to a processing unit determining a presence of an occupant in a seat. The detecting system has two electrodes coupled to respective metallic wires of a support sheet (12) in a manner to be electrically isolated in the absence of the occupant. An electrical conducting unit (16) contacts the metallic wires when the occupant presses a side of flexible padding, to measure resistivity. The support sheet is supported by a rigid structure and the two metallic wires of the support sheet is coupled to the structure. The electrical conducting unit forms another side of the padding that supports an occupant. An independent claim is also included for a seat including a back rest.
