Use of pentosans to stimulate the natural defenses of plants against attack by pathogens

Pentosans are used to stimulate the natural defenses of plants. An independent claim is also included for stimulating the natural defenses of plants by applying an aqueous solution with a pentosan concentration of 50-5000 or 0.1-50 mg/l at a rate of 10-1000 g/ha. ACTIVITY : Plant Protectant. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) stimulant; Lipoxygenase stimulant. A tobacco cell suspension incubated with 400 Microg/ml of a soluble arabinoxylan fraction produced by hydrolyzing purified 170 kD arabinoxylan with xylanase had a PAL activity of 100 pkat/g fresh weight after 6 hours.
