<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To establish a high speed determination method for an optimum area size with which a correction coefficient is multiplied in corrective motion compensation (MMC) through the estimation of a code amount and distortion of a motion compensation residual signal. <P>SOLUTION: First and second MMC sections 11, 12 apply corrective motion compensation to two kinds of area sizes and applies orthogonal transform to a prediction error signal. A transform coefficient electric power estimate section 130 of an optimum area size estimate section 13 calculates an estimate value of the electric power of the transform coefficient as to a plurality of intermediate area sizes in the two kinds of the area sizes on the basis of a result of the orthogonal transform. A coding distortion estimate section 131 estimates coding distortion for each of the intermediate area sizes on the basis of the estimated electric power of the transform coefficient and an optimum area size calculation section 132 calculates an optimum area size with which the correction coefficient is multiplied on the basis of the estimated coding distortion. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
