PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a pattern by which a fine and sharp pattern applicable in a wide range can be formed by an easy method, and to provide method for forming an image with excellent picture quality and resolution. SOLUTION: The method for forming a pattern comprises the steps of: forming a layer containing a polymerization initiator and a compound having a polymerizable unsaturated bond on a support, imagewisely exposing the layer, and hardening the compound having the polymerizable unsaturated bond by using a part of the polymerization initiator to form a hardened part and an unhardened part; removing the unhardened part by developing to form an image-wise polymerization initiating layer containing the unreacted polymerization initiator; and bringing a compound having a polymerizable group into contact with the polymerization initiating layer, irradiating the layer with light to produce a grafted polymer on the surface of the polymerization initiating layer by graft polymerization, and forming a hydrophilic/hydrophobic pattern consisting of a region where the grafted polymer is produced and a region where the grafted polymer is not produced.
