PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system for a projector realizing a light control mechanism reduced in loss of a quantity of light. SOLUTION: Polarizing plates 603, 604 and 605 are polarizers to allow the passage of only the light having a prescribed polarization direction. A retardation plate 610 has a function of rotating the polarization direction of the light by a specified angle. A holding mechanism 606 holding the retardation plate 610 can turn the direction of the retardation plate 610 around an optical axis LA. As a result, the quantity of light of a luminous flux made incident up to a cross dichroic prism 400 can be adjusted by changing the relative angles of the retardation plate 610 and the polarizing plates 603, 604 and 605.
