PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a side vision type scanning confocal probe whose assembly stage including the positioning operation of a scanning mirror is simplified, and which is made compact and small in terms of diameter. SOLUTION: The scanning confocal probe has a rectangular parallelopiped polarizing beam splitter equipped with a beam incident end face and a beam emitting end face orthogonal to each other, a polarized light separating face forming the angle of about 45°with any of the beam incident end face and the beam emitting end face, and a specified plane which forms the angle of about 45°with the polarized light separating face and on which a beam through the polarized light separating face is made incident, and disposed so that the polarized light separating face may be tilted by about 45°to the incident direction of a beam from a light source, a polarizing means disposed on the specified plane and changing the polarized state of the beam, and a scanning means attached on the polarizing means and scanning the tissue of an organism with the beam transmitted through the polarizing means. After the beam from the light source is made incident on the scanning means through the beam incident end face, the polarized light separating face and the polarizing means and deflected by the scanning means, it is emitted from the beam emitting end face.
