A low-profile roller skate (10) has a chassis (12) to which a wearer's shoe or foot can be securely fastened. Front and rear axles (16a and 16b) extend from angled slots (66a and 66b) in either side of the chassis (12), and are biased toward a horizontal, straight-ahead position. A wearer can steer the skate (10) by leaning in the direction of a desired turn, thus causing the axles (16a and 16b) to move along the slots (66a and 66b) and pivot in a direction which causes the wheels (18a and 18b) to turn in the desired direction. The wheels (18a and 18b) can be biased toward a straight-ahead position by resilient torque blocks (80) sandwiched between top and bottom chassis halves (34 and 36). The skate (10) can further be provided with toe and heel brakes (22a and 22b), removable grind pads (24), over-molded wheels (96), and quick-release straps (40). |
