PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve printing quality by securely detecting the width of a recording medium. SOLUTION: An inkjet printer is equipped with a side end detection means which detects the side end of the recording medium by emitting light from a light emitting element to the recording medium, while shifting a reflection type sensor in the direction perpendicular to a designated direction of transporting the recording medium. The reflection type sensor is composed of the light emitting element and a light receptor element which face against the recording medium transported in the designated direction. The subject tubular platen supports the recording medium to be transported and is arranged oppositely to the side end detection means. In order to control or suppress the light which is emitted from the light emitting element and reflected at the opposed surface to the recording medium and then led to the light receptor element, a reflection prevention treatment is provided on at least the opposed surface near the side end on the downward of recording medium of a prescribed size.
