PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grinder and its control method with which accuracy in detecting the contact state between a grindstone and a workpiece can be prevented from degrading due to noise even if the noise is present in a power value of an electric motor for rotating the grindstone. SOLUTION: A control unit (control section) 5 sets a predetermined period and detects a fluctuation range of the power value of the electric motor 22 and the maximum power value over the period during an indexing process with the grindstone 1 not in contact with an inner ring material (workpiece) 3. The control unit 5 determines a threshold for determining whether the grindstone 1 and the inner ring material 3 are in contact, using the fluctuation range and the maximum value, and compares the determined threshold with the power value of the electric motor 22 during a quasi-quick process after the predetermined period elapses, thereby detecting the contact state between the grindstone 1 and the inner ring material 3.
